In Cairo, recent regulations have been established for short-term rentals facilitated through platforms like Airbnb. The Cairo City Council approved a new ordinance that allows property owners to rent out their residential spaces for periods of up to 30 days. This ordinance, effective from March 23, mandates that hosts comply with local hotel and motel tax regulations and pay a fee of $75 to begin hosting.
The decision to permit short-term rentals came in response to community interest. Council members emphasized that the ordinance was refined after reviewing similar regulations in other municipalities, both local and in major U.S. cities. The regulatory framework aims to create a balance between fostering tourism and ensuring proper oversight of rental practices.
As hosts, property owners are reminded to adhere to local laws, which include maintaining the appropriate licensing and tax obligations. This development signifies Cairo’s recognition of the growing sharing economy and the importance of regulating it to benefit local communities and the broader tourism sector.
