The Moroccan authorities are intensifying efforts to regulate the burgeoning short-term rental market, particularly focusing on compliance with Decree No. 2.23.441, which mandates that all tourist accommodations, including Airbnb properties, must possess proper licenses.
Key regulations require property owners to obtain an Airbnb license, undergo safety inspections, and register with local authorities. Inspections are confidential and conducted by representatives from the tourism ministry, prioritizing those establishments with at least a three-star rating. Approved applications can lead to licensing within 30 days, whereas failures in compliance may result in revocation of permits.
Furthermore, a recent government audit revealed significant undeclared rental income in cities like Casablanca, pinpointing operations that have been capitalizing on the absence of oversight. The audit also disclosed that some hosts, particularly those residing abroad, used foreign nationalities to bypass local regulations.
The Ministry of Tourism emphasizes the importance of these regulations in maintaining quality standards within the hospitality sector, especially as Morocco continues to attract millions of tourists annually.
